CENTRAL CITY, Ky. — Central City Mayor Tony Armour has announced his resignation, citing personal health concerns, age, and a desire to focus on family after years of public service.

In a statement released to the public, the mayor said the decision followed extensive reflection, prayer, and discussions with family members.

"This decision comes down to a matter of my age, my medical issues I'm currently facing, and a realization that it is time for me to step back and focus on my personal life and the family that has supported me through all these years of public service," the statement said.

The mayor reflected on his time in office, saying he always sought to do what he believed was morally right for the City of Central City and its residents.

The resignation also comes amid questions surrounding work performed on city-owned properties and potential violations of Kentucky Revised Statutes (KRS). According to the statement, the city received estimates in May 2023 and April 2025 for roofing repairs at the Central City Convention Center and a city-owned rental building. The estimates reportedly totaled approximately $341,000.

The mayor stated that, based on his previous experience in construction, he submitted his own estimate and agreed to complete the repairs for $41,376, including material costs. He said the work was undertaken in good faith and with the intention of saving taxpayer money.

"These actions were done in good faith, in an attempt to better utilize taxpayer dollars, without knowledge that this was against regulations," the statement read.

The mayor acknowledged that state regulations could have required the city council to determine whether he should remain in office or resign. Rather than placing council members in what he described as a divisive position, he chose to step down voluntarily.

"Rather than causing turmoil and division amongst council members, I felt it best that I took it upon myself to resign," he said.

In closing, the mayor expressed optimism about Central City's future and encouraged younger generations to become involved in public service.

"Central City has a beautiful future ahead," he wrote. "It is my sincere hope that the younger generation will step up, take the torch, and carry this city even further than I ever could."

The statement concluded with gratitude to residents, city employees, and supporters who stood beside him throughout his tenure.

City officials are expected to announce details regarding the process for filling the mayoral vacancy in the coming days.
