MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. — Fans of legendary singer-songwriter John Prine will once again gather to celebrate his life and music during the Third Annual “Prine Park Birthday Bash,” set for Sunday, Oct. 12, 2025, from 1 to 5 p.m. at John Prine Memorial Park at Rochester Dam.
This year’s theme, “Birds of a Feather,” pays tribute to Prine’s fondness for Kentucky’s state bird, the cardinal. The informal, family-friendly celebration will feature an open mic session for local musicians, birthday treats, giveaways, a silent auction, food trucks, and plenty of fellowship among Prine fans from near and far.
Born Oct. 10, 1946, in Maywood, Illinois, Prine was the son of William and Verna Prine, both natives of Muhlenberg County. His 1970 classic “Paradise” was written for his father and immortalized the small Kentucky coal town on the banks of the Green River. Throughout his life, Prine returned often to Muhlenberg County, keeping close ties to his family’s roots and the community that inspired much of his music.
John Prine Memorial Park at Rochester Dam was dedicated on Oct. 1, 2022, following the singer’s passing in 2020. In keeping with his wishes, Prine’s family spread his ashes into the Green River — echoing his famous lyric, “When I die let my ashes float down the Green River / Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester Dam.”
The park is located on Boat Ramp Lane in Drakesboro (Highway 70 east of Browder). Limited seating and on-site disabled parking will be available; attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for comfort.
